Spanish is often easier to learn to read and write because it has a more consistent sound–letter relationship. Once students learn the sounds, they can decode most words accurately.

Spanish literacy has its own rules, structures, and conventions. For example, syllable patterns and spelling rules differ significantly from English, so Spanish literacy instruction needs to reflect those differences—not just translate English lessons.

Oral fluency in Spanish does not automatically mean literacy. Students still need explicit instruction in reading, writing, spelling, and grammar in Spanish.

Decoding is just the beginning. True literacy includes comprehension, vocabulary development, and writing skills—just like in any language.

Spanish-speaking students come from diverse backgrounds (different countries, dialects, and schooling experiences). Their literacy development varies widely.

My favorite products from Claudia Alonso have been the ABC books and the Decodable English and Spanish books. Each book ties perfectly with the letter of the week, and students are able to make letter sound connections with each image easily. We do shared reading each day with the books, and my students by the end of the week are reading the books by themselves independently. The Decodable books also tie in perfectly with all our math, social studies, and science lessons. Students get a deeper understanding of lessons taught because they are also connecting the lessons with their readers. I have used several products created by Claudia Alonso in the last 5-6 years. As a bilingual teacher it is not always easy to find products that are not only a translation of something done in English. I find her resources to be appropriate for the needs of bilingual students. Her resources are easy to use, age appropriate and helpful to me as a teacher to move students forward. For example, I have used her letter decodable books. The students are always very engaged coloring, highlighting and reading them. Those books have really helped my students grow as readers.

My name is Claudia Alonso. I’ve been a bilingual teacher in grades K-3 for over twenty years, and I specialize in early literacy.
